This week we had two races rather than our usual single Tuesday race. Reason being is that we were to have hosted the Greg Hill clinic at our track, which I and many riders signed up for so that we can advance our skills. Due to the special event our executives decided to make Thursday a race night so that the riders could showcase those newly acquired skills. Unfortunately Greg Hill canceled on us at the last possible moment because he had a feeling it would rain after looking at our local forecast. Needless to say, the two days the event was to take place, it was sunny all day with sprinkles of rain reported across the city.
Tuesday's race went well, there was five riders in my class, including two of the top riders Vincent and Simon. Vincent qualified for the main in the first heat, Simon in the second heat, and I, along with another rider transferred in the third and final heat. During the Main, Vincent and Simon took off leaving me no other option but to race for 3rd, which I got.
Thursday's race ended with a Second Place finish. We had a total of six riders in our class which changed the transfer system to 1-2-2. I finished Second in the first heat with Vincent taking first and taking the only transfer spot at that time. During the second heat I crossed the line in second, but the head official noticed that the rider who finished First had switched and rode a cruiser (24" wheels), as a result, he was disqualified for the race giving me second and the rider who was behind me second place and the second qualifying spot for that race.
During the Main event I had a solid start and was on the outside line. This is a huge advantage as it opens the first corner even more than if you were on the inside. I went in the first corner battling with the other riders and came out Second. I held my position and crossed the line in Second Place.
Our club is trying to run "Open/Fun" races in a formal fashion after our regular events, but after discussing this further it sounds like we will be running these along with our regular races. This allows for the riders to race more, but also uses more energy. Should be fun!
